Zverev Downs Nadal to Reach Roland-Garros Final

Nadal's French Open Reign Ends After Injury

Rafael Nadal's record-breaking reign at Roland-Garros came to an abrupt end on Friday, June 11, 2021, when he was forced to retire from his semi-final match against Alexander Zverev due to an ankle injury. Zverev, who had never before defeated Nadal at the French Open, was leading 6-3 7-6 5 6-3 at the time of the retirement.

The injury occurred in the third set when Nadal rolled his ankle while chasing a ball wide to his right. He immediately fell to the ground in pain and was unable to continue playing. Nadal later confirmed that he had suffered a Grade 2 tear of his peroneus brevis muscle.

The retirement marks Nadal's first-ever semi-final defeat at Roland-Garros. He had previously won 13 French Open titles, including the last four in a row. Zverev is only the third player to beat Nadal at Roland Garros, and it's only Nadal's fourth defeat in 116 matches at the French Open.

Zverev's victory sets up a final against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the other semi-final. Djokovic is seeking his second Roland-Garros title, while Zverev is aiming to win his first Grand Slam title.

Nadal's Legacy Remains Unmatched

Despite his disappointing end to this year's tournament, Nadal's legacy at Roland-Garros remains unmatched. He has won more titles at the French Open than any other player in history and is widely considered to be the greatest clay-court player of all time.

Nadal's injury is a major setback, but he is expected to make a full recovery and return to competition in the near future. He will undoubtedly be determined to reclaim his title at Roland-Garros next year and add to his already impressive legacy.

Zverev Seizes His Opportunity

Zverev's victory over Nadal represents a major breakthrough in his career. He had previously lost to Nadal in all four of their previous meetings, including the 2018 Roland-Garros semi-final.

Zverev played with great determination and resilience against Nadal, and he took full advantage of his opponent's injury. He will now have the opportunity to win his first Grand Slam title when he faces Djokovic in the final.
